The regulator has given it "strategic market status", opening the door to what it calls "proportionate interventions."
The UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has designated Google with "strategic market status" under new regulations, potentially requiring changes to ensure market competition.
The CMA has found that Google maintains a dominant position in the search and advertising sector, with over 90% of searches taking place on its platform. This decision opens the door for the CMA to introduce measures such as:
* "Choice screens" allowing users to see alternative search providers
* Giving publishers more control over their content
* Implementing "fair principles" for ranking websites in search results
* An effective complaints process for businesses
Google has expressed concerns that any measures could inhibit UK innovation and growth. The CMA is expected to begin a consultation on potential changes later this year.
Consumer groups have welcomed the decision, citing the need to address Google's dominance and protect competition in the market.
