Mon, 13 Oct 2025 China accuses US of 'double standards' over tariff threat

Beijing says it could introduce "countermeasures" if the US President imposes an an additional 100% tariff on Chinese imports.
China's government has responded strongly to US President Donald Trump's threat to impose a 100% tariff on Chinese goods, calling it "a typical example of US double standards". The country's commerce ministry said China could introduce its own unspecified countermeasures if the US president carries out his threat. China's spokesperson also criticized the US for abusing export control measures and adopting discriminatory practices against China. They stated that resorting to tariff threats is not the right way to engage with China, adding that they "do not want a trade war but are not afraid of one". The US had previously threatened tariffs on Chinese goods in response to Beijing's tightening of rules for rare earths exports, which Trump said was "becoming very hostile" and trying to hold the world "captive". However, Trump later tweeted that he was "not worried about China" and that President Xi Jinping would soon come around. The US president also mentioned that the USA wants to help China, not hurt it. Financial markets were rattled by Trump's initial comments, with stock indices falling sharply in both the US and mainland China.
