Wed, 15 Oct 2025 Vets must publish prices so pet owners not overcharged, watchdog says

Vet prices have risen at nearly twice the rate of inflation, the Competition and Markets Authority found.

* Many vet practice websites have no pricing information, with 84% having none at all.
* Vet prices have risen nearly twice as fast as inflation over the past seven years.
* CMA's proposals include: + Vets revealing if they are part of a large group + Capping prescription fees + Banning bonuses for offering specific treatments
* Hundreds of pet owners contacted the BBC with concerns over vet bills, including one woman who received a £12,000 bill to treat her dog.
* Many vets offer monthly subscription plans that vary in price and services included.
* The CMA found that practices owned by large vet groups charge 16.6% more on average than independent vets.
* The British Veterinary Association welcomed the recommendations but had some concerns about introducing comprehensive price lists.
* The RSPCA said publishing prices would help owners make informed decisions.
* Changes will be implemented through a legally binding CMA order expected to come into effect by the end of 2026.
