Thu, 16 Oct 2025 Trump says Modi has agreed to stop buying Russian oil

The US president says the move is "a big stop", but there has been no confirmation so far from Delhi.
US President Donald Trump claims that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has agreed to stop buying Russian oil within a short period of time, as the US seeks to cut off Moscow's energy funding amid the Ukraine war. However, an Indian embassy spokeswoman refused to comment on this claim. The US has been pushing India to halt its purchases of Russian oil, but Delhi has resisted so far, causing a diplomatic rift. Trump says he will now focus on persuading China to do the same, as well as Japan. He claims that India cannot immediately stop buying oil from Russia, but it will happen "soon". The US has imposed 50% tariffs on Indian goods in response to its purchases of Russian oil and arms.
