Customers still want "the sound and the emotion" of internal combustion engines, the company's boss Stephan Winkelmann said.
Lamborghini's CEO, Stephan Winkelmann, has stated that the company will continue to use internal combustion engines in its cars for at least the next decade. He believes that high-end buyers still value the sound and emotion of traditional engines over electric vehicles. The company plans to decide on the future of its new Lanzador model, which is currently scheduled to be all-electric, but may now be a plug-in hybrid instead.
Lamborghini's decision comes as demand for electric cars among luxury brands appears to be declining. Winkelmann stated that enthusiasm for electric vehicles has decreased, creating an opportunity for the company to focus on hybrid power. Despite being socially responsible, Lamborghini believes its low volume production won't have a significant impact on the environment.
The company currently offers three main models: the Temerario and Revuelto supercars, which are plug-in hybrids, and the Urus SUV, available as both a plug-in hybrid and a conventional petrol-powered car. The Fenomeno, a limited edition "super-sports" car, is also being produced.
Lamborghini had previously planned to release an all-electric successor to the Urus in 2029, but this plan has been shelved, with the electric model now expected in 2035. The company's future plans for its new grand tourer, the Lanzador, are uncertain, and may be decided on within the next month.
Winkelmann emphasized that continuing to use internal combustion engines would be "paramount for the success of the company", citing customer demand for the sound and emotion of traditional engines. This approach contrasts with Ferrari's plans to release its first all-electric car, the Elettrica, which will be unveiled next year.
Lamborghini also stressed that it is not ignoring the pressure to cut emissions, but believes its limited impact on the environment means that going fully electric is not a priority.
