Sun, 19 Oct 2025 China will soon have a new Five Year Plan. Here's how they have changed the world so far

Beijing's leaders are deciding on a blueprint that sets China's economic goals for the next decade.
1. 1978-1981: The introduction of "reform and opening up" by Deng Xiaoping led to the creation of free trading Special Economic Zones, transforming lives in China and fundamentally reshaping the global economy. 2. 2001-2010: China's entry into the World Trade Organization cemented its status as the workshop of the world, but also led to concerns about the "middle income trap". In response, China focused on developing "strategic emerging industries", including green technology like electric vehicles and solar panels. 3. 2011-present: The focus has shifted to "high quality development" under Xi Jinping's leadership, aiming to challenge American dominance in technology and put China at the forefront of the sector. This has led to a technological boom in China, but also raised concerns about national security among Western countries.
