Sun, 19 Oct 2025 The two words you need to help you push back at work

Ambition and work ethic help us succeed, but how can we stop drive damaging our health?
Learning to say no at work can be challenging, but it's essential for maintaining a healthy work-life balance and preventing burnout. Experts recommend setting boundaries by using specific language, such as "I don't" instead of "I can't", which invites negotiation. This can help reinforce limits and avoid overcommitting. Model and TV chef Lorraine Pascale experienced burnout when she refused to say no and took on too much at work and home. She advises that perfectionism and a fear of disappointing others can lead to burnout. Dr Claire Ashley, author of The Burnout Doctor, suggests adjusting goals to one's current capacity and taking regular breaks to complete the "stress cycle". She also recommends acknowledging successes and avoiding comparisons with colleagues. Not everyone is in a position to push back at work, but Dr Richard Duggins, an NHS psychiatrist, advises talking to bosses about preventing burnout. He notes that setting boundaries, asking for help, or adjusting workload can all be beneficial. Appreciating life stages and being realistic about what one can manage can also help prevent burnout. Lorraine Pascale's experience highlights the importance of learning to say no and prioritizing self-care.
