Sun, 26 Oct 2025 Trump raises tariffs on Canadian goods over Reagan advert

The US president announces he is adding 10% to current levies on one of the biggest US trading partners.

* Donald Trump announced he's increasing US tariffs on Canadian goods by 10% in response to an anti-tariff advert featuring Ronald Reagan in Ontario.
* The US already has a 35% tariff on most Canadian goods, with additional sector-specific levies on metals and automobiles.
* Tariffs are paid by companies importing foreign products, not the exporters themselves.
* Three-quarters of Canadian exports go to the US, making it Canada's largest trading partner.
* Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada is "ready to continue building on progress" in trade talks but will also develop trade relationships with other countries.
* Ontario Premier Doug Ford paused the anti-tariff advert campaign after Trump cut off discussions over the advert, but it will still appear through the weekend during games for the World Series.
* The Canadian Chamber of Commerce expressed hope that the threat of escalation can be resolved through diplomatic channels and further negotiation.
