Tue, 28 Oct 2025 Headlights to be reviewed after drivers complain of being 'blinded' at night

Concern over the glare from brighter headlamps is prompting the government to review vehicle design.

* The UK government plans to launch a new assessment into dazzle from oncoming headlights, after growing concerns among drivers.
* Research commissioned by the Department for Transport (DfT) last winter has not been published yet, but will inform the upcoming Road Safety Strategy.
* Drivers say LED headlamps are causing problems due to their brighter and more focused light, making it harder to drive at night.
* A new survey from the RAC found that over a third of drivers are nervous about driving in the dark, and three-quarters said driving is getting more difficult due to brighter lights.
* The DfT plans to commission new research into vehicle design and possible solutions to reduce glare.
* The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has stepped up surveillance to stop the sale of illegal retrofit headlamp bulbs.
* Car manufacturers are also working on solutions, such as automatic headlamp dipping and adaptive features that adjust lamp angles based on load.
