Sun, 09 Nov 2025 More than 1,400 flights cancelled as US air traffic cuts enter second day

Thousands more flights have been delayed or cancelled as the reduction of air travel capacity continues during the federal government shutdown.

* Over 1,400 flights were cancelled and nearly 6,000 delayed on Saturday due to a federal government shutdown.
* The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reduced air travel capacity by up to 10% at 40 busy airports after air traffic controllers reported fatigue from working without pay.
* The longest US government shutdown in history is now in its 39th day and lawmakers are holding weekend talks to resolve the impasse.
* American Airlines urged party leaders to reach a resolution to end the shutdown, which is affecting millions of federal workers, including TSA agents who are not being paid.
* Airports such as Newark Liberty International, Charlotte/Douglas International, and Chicago O'Hare International were among those with the most cancelled flights on Saturday.
* The FAA has announced further flight reductions will be implemented in the coming days to maintain safety amid overworked air traffic controllers.
* The shutdown is also affecting food aid payments and other government services.
