Wall insulation installed under two separate schemes was supposed to keep residents warm and dry, but instead left some homes damp and mouldy
Government officials admit "serious failings" led to damp issues in thousands of homes with botched net zero schemes, putting health and safety at risk. The National Audit Office found 98% of 23,000 homes with external wall insulation will develop damp and mould if left unaddressed. A government official apologized for the mistakes, saying they were "unacceptable". Over 3 million homes have been insulated under various government schemes in the past 20 years, with billions of pounds spent on public money. The official acknowledged that the department didn't oversee these schemes properly and that there was systemic failure at every level. A report from Trustmark, responsible for overseeing insulation work quality, also highlighted poor oversight by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. The government is yet to take full responsibility for affected homeowners and has stated that its main focus is on two specific schemes introduced since 2022.
