Thu, 13 Nov 2025 Parents' 'laughter and tears' at adopting siblings

Emma and Mike, from North Yorkshire, urge others to consider adoption as the number doing so falls.
A couple who adopted two siblings in January said they want to encourage others to consider adoption, as numbers are declining due to the cost of living crisis. Emma and Mike from North Yorkshire have urged people to think differently about adoption, which they say is often seen as a last resort. They believe that the rising costs may be contributing to a 12% drop in adoption registrations in England this year compared to 2024. The couple said their experience of adopting has been positive, with lots of laughter and learning along the way. Emma shared her moment of realization when she heard their son's giggle at an "adoption activity day" and knew they were meant to be his parents. Emma and Mike want to raise awareness about the need for more adoptive families, particularly in regions like Yorkshire and Humber where 390 children are waiting for a forever family. They said that adoption is not just for those who cannot have biological children but can also bring a lot of joy and love into their lives. The Adoption Matters charity has expressed concern over the decline in adoption registrations and believes that the cost of living crisis may be playing a significant role. Jacqui Shore from the charity said local authorities are struggling with funding, which means they may not be able to offer support for older children or sibling groups who need adopting.
