Thu, 13 Nov 2025 UK's first small nuclear power station to be built in north Wales

Three small modular reactors are confirmed for the site, with the potential for up to eight.
The Wylfa site has been chosen for the UK's first three small modular reactors (SMRs), with a potential capacity of up to eight. The project is backed by the government and will create long-term investment in the local economy. A £2.5bn investment from the UK government will be used to fund the construction of the plant, which is expected to start generating power by the mid-2030s. The SMRs are designed by Rolls-Royce and will be built on a modular basis, with each reactor being constructed in factories before being shipped to the site for assembly. Opponents have raised concerns about the lack of storage facilities for nuclear waste and investment in renewable energy schemes. However, supporters say that the plant will provide energy independence and create jobs for local people. The project has been welcomed by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and First Minister Eluned Morgan, who said it was a "historic moment" for the UK.
