Sat, 15 Nov 2025 Trump rolls back tariffs on dozens of food products

The executive order allowing products like coffee and bananas to escape tariffs comes as the Trump administration faces mounting pressure over rising prices.
US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order exempting certain food products from his tariffs, including coffee, bananas, and beef. The move is aimed at easing pressure on prices, which have been rising due to the tariffs. The list of exemptions includes avocados, tomatoes, coconuts, mangoes, and many other items that cannot be produced in sufficient quantities domestically. Trump's administration has argued that these products are necessary for US consumers and that the tariffs would not lead to increased prices. However, Trump had previously downplayed concerns about rising prices, saying affordability was a "new word" and a "con job" by Democrats. He claimed the tariffs were necessary to reduce the US trade deficit and encourage Americans to buy domestic goods. But as grocery costs continued to rise, particularly for beef, Trump has focused on addressing the issue. The exemptions signal a reversal of the Trump administration's previous stance on tariffs, which have been criticized by economists who warn that companies will pass the cost onto consumers in the form of higher prices. The new exemptions take effect retroactively at midnight on Thursday, November 13, and include more than 100 products no longer subject to levies. In addition to the exemptions, Trump has vowed to decrease coffee prices by 20% in the US this year as part of trade deals with four Latin American countries.
