The 60 day pilot will use signals from mobile phone masts and satellites in space to create a more reliable connection.
The pilot will run for 60 days on GWR's Intercity Express Train in the South West region, with the goal of providing faster and more consistent internet access for passengers. According to a recent study by Ookla, the UK ranked 16th out of 18 countries for train wi-fi speed, with average download speeds at just 1.09 megabits per second.
The technology allows trains to switch between ground and space-based networks without dropouts, improving connectivity and reliability. The pilot is seen as a major milestone in modernizing transport infrastructure across the South West and South Wales.
The scheme has been welcomed by Railfuture campaigners, who believe it will help improve passenger experience and make train travel more appealing.
