One of the pioneers in the current AI boom, he has had disagreements with fellow engineers over the future of the technology.
Professor Yann LeCun, a prominent figure in artificial intelligence and winner of the prestigious Turing Award, has announced his departure from Meta after 12 years as chief AI scientist. He is leaving to start a new company focused on "advanced machine intelligence", which involves training AI models using visual learning rather than large language models (LLMs). LeCun's departure comes amid speculation that the current AI boom may be overvalued and due for a correction, with some predicting a ripple effect across the wider economy. Despite his contributions to the field of AI, LeCun has been at odds with some in the industry over the future of AI, including his views on the limitations of LLMs and their potential impact on human intelligence. His new company will reportedly partner with Meta, but the exact nature of this partnership is unclear.
