Regulator Ofgem will announce its next price cap, affecting the bills of millions of people from January.

* Ofgem will announce a new energy price cap on Friday, which will take effect at the start of January
* Prices for millions of households in England, Wales, and Scotland are expected to fall by 1% from current levels
* The cap sets a maximum price per unit of gas and electricity, but those who use more energy will still pay more
* A household using a "typical" amount of energy currently pays £1,755 a year under the current cap
* Analysts predict prices will rise again in April
* Charities report record levels of unpaid bills and charges to suppliers, with £4.4bn owed in total
* Ofgem plans to write off some of this debt, potentially up to £500m
* Energy UK advises households facing difficulties paying their energy bill to contact their provider for help
* The government is considering extra cost-of-living support in the upcoming Budget on 26 November
