Around 6,000 planes were affected after an issue that could corrupt data was discovered.
About 6,000 Airbus A320 planes were briefly grounded due to a warning that solar radiation could interfere with onboard computers. The affected aircraft required either a software update or a replacement computer. Air France flights at Paris's Charles de Gaulle Airport were delayed or cancelled on Saturday morning. American Airlines expected "operational delays" but most updates were completed by Saturday. Delta Airlines said the impact on its operations would be limited.
In the UK, airlines worked through the night to carry out the update and air traffic was not seriously affected. London's Gatwick Airport reported some disruption while Heathrow did not experience any cancellations. British Airways and Air India were not heavily impacted.
Easyjet and Wizz Air operated as normal after completing updates overnight. In Australia, budget airline Jetstar cancelled 90 flights but most of its aircraft have now undergone the update. Air New Zealand grounded its A320 planes but all fights resumed after the update was completed.
Airbus discovered the issue after a JetBlue Airways plane lost altitude and emergency landed in October due to corrupted data from intense solar radiation at high altitudes. The company's best-selling aircraft, including the A318, A319, and A321 models, were also affected.
