Social media users have called the luxury Italian fashion brand's artificial intelligence-made adverts "cheap" and "lazy".
Valentino has come under fire for using artificial intelligence (AI) in an online advert for its luxury handbag, DeVain. The Italian fashion house collaborated with digital artists on a "digital creative project" but critics have slammed the AI-generated visuals as "sloppy" and "sad". The Instagram post features a surreal collage of models emerging from a gold version of the handbag, with the brand's logo transforming into people's arms. Many users accused Valentino of being "lazy" for using AI instead of working with human creatives. The use of generative AI in fashion has raised concerns about its impact on human workers and the quality of products. Anne-Liese Prem, head of cultural insights at Loop, said that while there are benefits to using AI, it can make luxury feel less human when people crave human presence. She warned that without a strong emotional idea behind it, generative AI can be seen as cost-saving disguised as innovation.
