Thu, 11 Dec 2025 Shell facing first UK legal claim over climate impacts of fossil fuels

Survivors of a deadly typhoon in the Philippines have filed a claim against the UK's largest oil company.

* Around 400 people were killed and millions of homes affected when Typhoon Rai (Odette) hit the Philippines in 2021.
* A group of 67 survivors, including Trixy Elle, have filed a claim against Shell in UK courts seeking compensation for the company's role in making the storm more severe.
* Shell says the claim is "baseless" and that it had no unique knowledge about climate change.
* The claimants argue that Shell is responsible for 2% of historical global greenhouse gases, making them liable for contributing to human-driven climate change.
* If successful, this would be a landmark case in attributing individual extreme weather events to climate change caused by fossil fuel production.
