Sun, 14 Dec 2025 Brixton Soup Kitchen prepares for busy Christmas

Volunteers are preparing hampers and toys for local children who would otherwise go without.
The Brixton Soup Kitchen in South London has seen a surge in demand as Christmas approaches, with over 7,000 meals cooked every month. The charity, which was founded by Solomon Smith over a decade ago, initially aimed to feed homeless people but now supports anyone who cannot afford food. According to Mr. Smith, the idea for the soup kitchen came from his own experiences growing up in poverty. He witnessed children stealing food and clothes just to survive, and he wanted to make a difference. "I was lucky to have my parents at home, but many of my friends didn't," he said. Today, the charity feeds around 200 people every day, with donations coming from local shops, supermarkets, and individuals. Volunteers also distribute toys to local children on Christmas Day, as well as creating secret hampers for those in need, so they can celebrate the holiday without feeling ashamed. One visitor to the soup kitchen, Elijah Augustus, described it as a "lifeline" that gives him strength. Another visitor, Balasubramanian Sathiabaskaran, said he has high blood pressure and appreciates being able to save some of his meal for later. The charity's efforts have also inspired volunteers like Jennifer Wilson, who grew up on the same council estate as Mr. Smith. "We want every child to feel loved and appreciated on Christmas," she said.
