* Gridlock anticipated, with congestion around motorway interchanges and retail destinations
* 460,000 journeys planned at airports, making it the busiest day of the Christmas period for air travel
* Network Rail advises travellers to check their routes and book seats in advance due to improvement works
* National Rail trains do not run on Christmas Day and only a small number will operate on Boxing Day
* Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) warns that flying on Christmas Day is becoming more popular, but advises customers to know their rights in case of flight cancellations or delays
