Wegovy becomes first pill of its kind to be approved, shifting weight-loss drugs beyond injections.
The US FDA has approved a pill version of weight-loss medication Wegovy, marking a significant milestone in the development of oral weight loss treatments. Novo Nordisk, the Danish manufacturer of Wegovy, stated that the once-daily pill offers the same level of weight loss as its injectable counterpart and is a convenient option for patients. The FDA's approval comes after successful clinical trials, which showed an average weight loss of 16.6% among participants. A third of trial participants experienced a weight loss of 20% or more. The Wegovy pill is expected to be available in the US market by early January 2026. Novo Nordisk's CEO Mike Doustdar said that patients will now have access to a convenient, once-daily pill that can help them achieve significant weight loss.
