Fri, 26 Dec 2025 US judge blocks detention of British social media campaigner

Imran Ahmed was among five people accused of seeking to "coerce" US firms into censoring free speech.
A US judge has temporarily blocked the detention and possible deportation of British social media campaigner Imran Ahmed, who was facing removal from the country after his visa was revoked by the Trump administration. The Center for Countering Digital Hate founder had warned that being detained would tear him away from his American wife and child. Ahmed's lawyer Roberta Kaplan praised the judge's decision as a sign that the federal government cannot deport someone with a green card, a wife, and young child "simply because it doesn't like what he has to say". The Trump administration had accused Ahmed of trying to coerce tech platforms into censoring free speech. Ahmed's organization, which monitors online content, had previously been sued by Elon Musk's social media company after reporting on a rise in hate speech on the platform.
