Sat, 27 Dec 2025 'Families can save £200 a month at community shop'

Customers say the social supermarket in North Bransholme is taking the pressure off the weekly shop.
A new "social supermarket" on a council estate in Hull has been hailed as a game-changer by families struggling to make ends meet.
* Packs of fruit, vegetables and bread can be bought for just 20p
* Hundreds of people visited the store on its opening day, with bosses estimating it could save families over £200 a month
* Anyone who lives in the area, receives means-tested benefits and applies for free membership can use the shop
* The store is run by the Community Shop Group, a social enterprise that aims to reduce food waste by selling surplus stock from the food industry
* Profits will be reinvested into a community hub, where members can learn new skills
* A community kitchen and cafe sells breakfasts and lunches for £1.50, with free children's meals all year round
