Sat, 27 Dec 2025 Treasury to cover Bayeux Tapestry for estimated £800m

The huge embroidery will be covered under the government's indemnity scheme when it travels to the UK.
The 70m-long embroidery will be covered under the Government Indemnity Scheme (GIS), which protects situations like loss or damage. Without the scheme, public museums and galleries would face a substantial commercial insurance premium, making it less cost effective. Concerns have been raised about the move, with some French art experts arguing that the nearly 1,000-year-old work was in too delicate a state to be transported. The loan will not be formally confirmed until a final valuation is completed, which is estimated to be around £800m.
