The Civil Aviation Authority reckons up to half a million people in the UK may be impacted by its new requirements.
From January 1st, UK residents who own a drone or model aircraft weighing 100g or more must complete an online theory test before flying outdoors. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has introduced this new requirement for all drones and model aircraft, regardless of weight, but notes that up to half a million people may be impacted by the change.
Those who fail to comply with the rules will face fines or even prison sentences in severe cases. To obtain a Flyer ID license, which is valid for five years, individuals must pass an online theory test and register their drone or model aircraft with the CAA if it has a camera.
The new rules also apply to children, but requirements vary depending on age:
* Children under 13 must have a parent or guardian present when taking the free flyer theory test.
* Children aged 12 or younger must be supervised by someone over 16 when flying drones, and parents must obtain an Operator ID.
Existing drone owners and ID holders are also advised to familiarize themselves with the new rules, which outline where drones should not be flown and how to protect people's privacy when using camera-equipped drones.
