Fri, 02 Jan 2026 China's BYD set to overtake Tesla as world's top EV seller

It would mark the first time the Chinese firm has outpaced its American rival for annual sales.
BYD, China's leading electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, has surpassed Tesla as the world's largest EV seller in 2025, according to recent sales figures. BYD reported a significant increase in EV sales last year, reaching over 2.25 million vehicles, which is nearly a 28% rise from the previous year. In contrast, Tesla's sales are estimated to have been around 1.65 million vehicles for the entire year. Tesla has faced challenges in recent months, including a mixed reception to new models and competition from Chinese rivals like BYD. The company introduced lower-priced versions of its top-selling models in October to boost sales, but this move was met with criticism that Tesla had been slow to release affordable options. Elon Musk, who is also the CEO of SpaceX and other ventures, has a target to significantly increase Tesla's sales and stock market value over the next decade. He will receive a payout of up to $1 trillion if he meets this goal, which includes selling one million humanoid robots in ten years. Despite BYD's rapid expansion, its sales growth slowed in 2025 to its weakest rate in five years due to increasing competition from other EV manufacturers like XPeng and Nio. However, the company remains a global leader in the EV market due to its competitive pricing.
