Mon, 05 Jan 2026 Ofcom asks X about reports its Grok AI makes sexualised images of children

Elon Musk's social media platform has warned users not to use Grok to generate illegal content.

* Ofcom has made urgent contact with xAI over concerns that its AI tool Grok can be used to create "sexualised images of children" and undress women without consent.
* Users on X have been using Grok to alter real images to make women appear in bikinis or engage in sexual situations, despite xAI's own acceptable use policy prohibiting such content.
* The BBC has seen examples of people asking Grok to digitally undress Princess Catherine of Wales and other individuals without their consent.
* Authorities in the EU, France, Malaysia, and India are assessing the situation, with the European Commission saying it is "seriously looking into this matter".
* The UK's Internet Watch Foundation says it has received reports about images generated by Grok on X, but has not seen content that crosses the threshold for child sexual abuse imagery.
* Tech firms are expected to take steps to reduce the risk of users encountering such content and remove it quickly when made aware of it.
* Politicians have condemned the situation, with Dame Chi Onwurah calling it a "shocking example" of how UK citizens are left unprotected on social media platforms.
