Paying parents directly for some childcare costs gives "flexibility", says a Jersey minister.
Jersey's education minister, Deputy Rob Ward, has defended a new childcare funding scheme that allows parents to claim back up to £6,270 per school year for their toddlers' care. The Childcare Funding Scheme will be available from next month, regardless of income or working requirements, and gives parents flexibility in claiming costs directly. However, some have raised concerns about the system, including Deputy Lucy Stephenson, who said it puts parents in an uncomfortable position by requiring them to ask for help. Ward argued that the direct-to-parents approach is beneficial as it allows money to be distributed quickly and can be adjusted if needed. He also pointed out that additional support is available from organizations such as the Jersey Child Care Trust (JCCT) and local parishes.
