Fri, 09 Jan 2026 Ofcom urged to use 'banning' powers over X AI deepfakes

It follows an ongoing backlash against the use of X's AI Grok to digitally remove clothing from images.
The UK government has called on Ofcom, the media regulator, to use all its powers to take action against X (formerly Twitter) over concerns that its AI image editing tool, Grok, is being used to create unlawful and potentially child-sexualised images. The government has expressed outrage at the issue, with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer saying it's "disgraceful" and "not to be tolerated". Ofcom has announced an investigation into the matter and may use its powers under the Online Safety Act to ban X from operating in the UK or restrict its access to funding. The government has given Ofcom its full support to take action against X, with sources saying they expect Ofcom to use all of its powers to address the issue.
