Mon, 19 Jan 2026 How could Europe respond to Trump's Greenland tariffs?

Europe is weighing up how to counter the US president's move against some of America's closest allies.

* US President Donald Trump threatened to impose tariffs on eight European countries, including the UK, unless they support his plan to buy Greenland.
* Trump said he would introduce a 10% levy on imports into the US from February 1, rising to 25% if no deal is done.
* The EU has said it will consider responding with its own tariffs, which could total €93bn worth of American goods.
* However, the "trade bazooka", a law that allows the EU to respond to economic blackmail, is seen as a last resort and could take up to a year to deploy.
* The UK government has ruled out immediate retaliatory tariffs against the US.
* Other options for the UK include increasing the Digital Services Tax on American tech companies.
* The legality of Trump's tariffs is being challenged in court, including by the US Supreme Court.
