Wed, 21 Jan 2026 Trump greenlit tiny Kei cars but will Americans actually buy them?

The president wants to bring to the US tiny vehicles, like those commonly seen on the streets of Japan.
Despite this enthusiasm, several challenges remain for Kei cars in the US market. These include low safety standards, high costs due to tariffs on imported parts, rising car prices, and consumer preferences for larger vehicles. Business accounts manager Nevi Bergeron, who owns a rare 1997 Suzuki Cappuccino, stated that while it is fun to drive, it's not exactly what she'd call safe, especially next to big trucks. Trump has approved tiny cars to be built in America after visiting Japan, saying they are "inexpensive, safe, fuel efficient and AMAZING!!!." However, manufacturers must address concerns over prices, safety standards, and whether Americans can be convinced to downsize from larger vehicles.
