Tue, 27 Jan 2026 Change aims to make credit card access 'simpler'

A legal loophole stopping islanders apply for credit cards has been removed by the States.
The States Assembly has approved an amendment that allows Jersey's government to share information with UK credit reference agencies, making it easier for islanders to get approved for a credit card.
* The change removes the main barrier to successful applications
* It will be up to banks to decide if they wish to re-enter Jersey's credit card market
* The government can now share people's names and addresses with credit agencies for specific reasons, including credit checks and law enforcement
* An opt-out is provided for islanders who don't want their information shared
* Treasury Minister Elaine Miller called the change "exciting" and said it should resolve Jersey's biggest issue around credit card availability.
