Wed, 28 Jan 2026 Vulnerable missing out on benefits due to online tool

Benefits calculators can leave some people confused and in a dire financial state, say campaigners.
A charity has revealed that vulnerable people are being left behind because they cannot access online benefits calculators, resulting in an estimated £24m in unclaimed financial support each year. Many individuals, especially those with mental health difficulties, require face-to-face advice to navigate complex benefit systems and avoid further debt. However, due to a lack of personalized guidance, these individuals are often left struggling to manage their finances. One woman's story highlights the importance of personalized support. After her husband suffered a stroke, she was on the verge of losing her home, car, and medical benefits. It wasn't until an adviser visited her at home that they were able to access vital financial assistance. Now, this woman runs an advice service in Liverpool, helping others who are too busy caring for loved ones to manage their finances. The charity, Money and Mental Health Policy Institute, has called for a more coordinated approach to providing personalized advice, including increased funding for services and better referrals from banks and essential providers. The institute's report estimates that £24m of financial support goes unclaimed annually due to a lack of accessible advice.
