Sat, 31 Jan 2026 Plan ahead and dress wisely: How to minimise add-on costs when you fly

Don't get swept into paying for extras you don't need.
EasyJet was found to have misled customers about its carry-on bag prices, which can range from £20-£30, not £5.99 as previously advertised. The airline was ordered by the UK advertising watchdog to stop claiming that lower price is available. Budget airlines often charge extra for luggage, seat selection, and priority boarding, generating billions of pounds in ancillary revenue each year. However, passengers can avoid some charges by packing lightly, sharing a case with someone else, or using items like dry robes with large pockets. Travelers are advised to pay for luggage as early as possible, as prices may increase closer to departure, and adding luggage at the airport or gate is usually more expensive. Different airlines have different rules regarding luggage size, so it's essential to check each airline's website for specific limits. To save money on baggage fees:
* Pack lightly and use items like hotel body wash and a hairdryer-free travel plan.
* Share a case with someone else to split the cost.
* Use dry robes or vests with multiple pockets to carry essentials.
* Remove wheels from luggage before boarding to avoid exceeding size limits. It's also worth noting that paying for priority boarding may not be necessary, as passengers will not be charged if there is no room in the overhead bins. However, they may have to wait longer for their luggage upon arrival.
