A York Students' Union survey claims some have to choose between eating or doing their laundry.
A university's high laundry costs are forcing students to choose between eating and washing their clothes, a union has claimed. Students at the University of York face £5.10 per load for washing and drying, compared to £3 at neighboring York St John University. A survey by the students' union found that this cost is a significant burden on students, with some having to spend up to £20 per week on laundry. Female students are particularly affected, as they often need to do more laundry due to their periods. Students on certain courses, such as nursing, have additional laundry costs due to the requirement for uniforms. The university claims that its laundry rates are lower than those of local commercial laundrettes, but students argue that the high prices are unfair and create added financial pressure in an already expensive city.
