Danone has recalled 15 more batches of Aptamil and Cow&Gate first infant milk because a toxin called cereulide may be present.
The UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) has issued another recall notice for baby formula products due to potential contamination. Danone, the manufacturer of Aptamil and Cow & Gate first infant and follow-on milks, is recalling 14 more batches after detecting low levels of a toxin called cereulide. This toxin can cause vomiting and stomach cramps in babies.
Cereulide was found in one batch of Aptamil First Infant Formula in January and is linked to an ingredient called arachidonic acid (ARA) oil in infant formula. A third-party supplier, which has been discontinued by the companies, is believed to be the source of the contamination.
Parents are being asked to check their batches at home as the affected products may still be stored in cupboards. If a batch is found to be contaminated, parents should stop using it immediately and return it to the store for exchange.
So far, 28 batches of baby formula products have been recalled globally since December, including batches of SMA made by Nestle and Aptamil and Cow & Gate made by Danone. The FSA assures that unaffected products are still available in big supermarkets such as Tesco and Co-op.
Symptoms of consuming contaminated infant milk include nausea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps. However, UK health officials report that none of the 36 children suspected to have been affected by food poisoning from contaminated baby formula are seriously ill.
Danone has given assurances to the FSA that recalled batches were produced some time ago and are unlikely still to be on UK shop shelves. The company's spokesperson stated that they "never compromise on food safety" and take responsibility for ensuring their products meet strict standards.
