Experts call for urgent action by businesses to restore the natural systems that keep them running.
A new report by scientists warns that businesses will become extinct if they don't protect and restore nature. The report, approved by 150 governments, suggests companies can shift from harming nature to helping it recover.
Businesses rely on natural services such as clean water and fertile soils for free, but are often more profitable when degrading biodiversity rather than protecting it.
The report highlights examples of companies working with nature, including Steart Marshes in Somerset where farmers and conservationists manage land to support both wildlife and agriculture.
Restoring nature can benefit local communities by reducing pollution and absorbing carbon. However, the report notes that only a small percentage of publicly reporting companies mention their impacts on biodiversity in their reports.
Experts warn that businesses must take action to protect nature or risk extinction not just for species, but potentially also their own survival.
