Tue, 10 Feb 2026 US to exempt some Bangladeshi clothes from tariffs

The White House agreed to carve out exemptions for US-produced cotton from Bangladesh.

* Bangladesh has secured exemptions on some US-made textiles and clothes, as part of a new agreement with Washington.
* The US will cut its tariffs on Bangladesh from 20% to 19%, in exchange for Dhaka opening up its markets to more American goods.
* The apparel industry is the backbone of Bangladesh's economy, accounting for over 80% of the country's export revenue and employing around 4 million workers.
* In exchange for the tariff cut, Bangladesh has agreed to provide preferential market access to a range of US goods, including: + Agricultural products (soy, meat) + Industrial goods (chemicals, medical devices, car parts) + Food and vehicles
* The agreement also requires Bangladesh to observe international labour rights, environmental protection efforts, and safety standards for food, drugs, and vehicles.
* The tariff cut brings Bangladesh's rate in line with its neighbour India, which faces a 18% levy from the US.
