Thu, 12 Feb 2026 Probe ordered into Daily Mail owner's £500m takeover of Telegraph

Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy orders a review of the deal on public interest and competition grounds.
The UK government has launched an investigation into the proposed £500m takeover of the Telegraph by Daily Mail and General Trust (DMGT) due to concerns over media plurality and competition. Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy has ordered the probe, citing fears that the deal could harm the "plurality of views" in the UK media. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) will assess competition issues, while Ofcom will examine the public interest impact. DMGT says it will cooperate with regulators to complete the deal, which would provide stability and certainty for the Telegraph group. The probe is the latest development in a years-long saga over the sale of the Telegraph Media Group, which went up for sale in 2023 due to debt owed by its previous owners. The CMA and Ofcom are expected to report back to the government by June 10. DMGT has pledged to invest in the Telegraph and preserve its editorial voice, but critics have raised concerns over the potential impact on media diversity.
