Consumer outlet Which? has been campaigning on access to loyalty schemes, calling it a "huge win for shoppers".
Tesco plans to allow under-18s to join its Clubcard loyalty scheme later this year, which offers discounts and points that can be redeemed for vouchers. The supermarket has not provided a reason for extending eligibility to younger customers or details on how it will work.
This decision follows pressure from consumer advocacy group Which?, which argued that limiting access to loyalty schemes based on age is "unfair". The UK's competition regulator also suggested that supermarkets could broaden their customer bases by allowing under-18s to participate in rewards programs.
Loyalty cards are a way for retailers to collect data and offer customers personalized deals. Most major UK supermarkets, including Tesco, currently require customers to be 18 or older to sign up for loyalty schemes.
However, some supermarkets have made exceptions for younger customers, such as allowing them to access accounts through their parents or guardians.
Tesco's decision has been welcomed by Which?, which stated that millions of customers are excluded from getting discounts due to age and other eligibility requirements. The consumer advocacy group has called on other supermarkets to follow Tesco's lead.
Industry experts expect other major retailers to consider extending their loyalty schemes to under-18s, citing the potential benefits for customers and the company's competitiveness in a market where prices are rising.
