Tue, 17 Feb 2026 Reddit's human content wins amid the AI flood

Reddit says its human contributors are valued amid an internet awash with AI-generated content.
Reddit, a platform launched in 2005, has seen a surge in popularity with 116 million daily active users worldwide, an increase of 19% compared to the previous year. According to Jen Wong, chief operating officer at Reddit, the human element is key to its success, particularly as people crave authenticity and connection in a world dominated by AI-driven content. Women make up over 50% of Reddit users, with women in the UK accounting for more than half of all users. The platform's demographic has changed over time, shifting from being seen as a space for gamers and tech enthusiasts to becoming a hub for diverse communities and interests. However, concerns have been raised about the credibility of conversations on subreddits, with inconsistencies in moderation approaches leading to issues such as groupthink and echo chambers. Dr Yusuf Oc, senior lecturer in marketing at Bayes Business School, notes that upvotes can reward popular opinions rather than factual accuracy, creating a flawed system. In response to these challenges, Reddit has implemented policies to prohibit manipulated content and inauthentic behavior, with safety teams enforcing rules through human review and automated tooling. Moderators play a crucial role in setting and enforcing subreddit-specific rules, although inconsistencies in moderation can still occur. Users such as Ines Tan and Josh Feldberg attest to the platform's unique qualities, including its empathetic community and lack of economic incentives for posting content. As AI-driven platforms increasingly cite Reddit as a source, Wong believes people are visiting the site because of its authenticity and human connection, citing examples of personal experiences shared in threads about health and relationships. The study by Profound found that Reddit was the number one most cited source across AI platforms, further highlighting its growing importance. Despite challenges, Reddit's surge in popularity suggests a desire for genuine connections and nuanced discussions in a world where highly-polished content often dominates social media.
