The "pre-loved" fashion firm has been sold by Etsy just five years after it bought the firm.
eBay has acquired Depop, a second-hand clothing app popular among Gen Z shoppers, for $1.2bn (£890m). Etsy, which bought Depop in 2021 for $1.6bn, is offloading the platform just five years later as part of its efforts to focus on core business areas. The all-cash deal will see Depop retain its name and branding and is expected to be completed by mid-year. eBay hopes that the acquisition will help it tap into a younger demographic and boost sales in the used clothes market, one of its fastest-growing categories. Depop has over 7 million active buyers under the age of 34 and more than 3 million active sellers. The platform has become one of the fastest-growing fashion resale marketplaces in the US. Etsy's share price rose by 15% after hours while eBay's was up nearly 6.5%.
