The company says it has addressed the issue and it "did not provide anyone access to information they weren't already authorised to see".
The error occurred when users interacted with the tool within Outlook or Teams, allowing it to process email messages stored in their drafts and sent items, even if they had a sensitivity label and data loss prevention policy configured to prevent unauthorized data sharing.
Microsoft has released an update to fix the issue and says that no one was given access to information they weren't already authorized to see.
The blunder was first reported by tech news outlet Bleeping Computer in January and a configuration update has been deployed worldwide for enterprise customers.
Some experts have warned that this kind of mistake is inevitable due to the speed at which companies are adding new AI features, and that organizations using these tools often lack the necessary tools to protect themselves and manage each new feature.
