Mon, 23 Feb 2026 Are you cut out for living and working in Antarctica?

Jobs are available on the icy continent for chefs, plumbers, carpenters and even hairdressers.

* The UK's British Antarctic Survey (BAS) and the US's Antarctic Program are hiring staff for their research facilities in Antarctica.
* Vacancies are available for various roles, including carpenters, electricians, chefs, hairdressers, and more, not just scientists and engineers.
* Dan McKenzie, station leader at Halley VI Research Station, shares his experience of working in Antarctica and the challenges that come with it.
* McKenzie worked his way up to the role after completing his first contract on the ice in 2019 and is responsible for managing supplies, health and safety, and training.
* The BAS takes on around 150 new recruits each year, with salaries starting at £31,244 per annum and all travel, accommodation, meals, and gear provided.
* However, living and working in Antarctica comes with its challenges, including extreme cold, isolation, and close proximity to colleagues.
* A clinical psychologist notes that social dynamics can be more problematic than physical hazards, and relationships breaking down can be hard to rectify.
* Despite the demands of the job, McKenzie says it's an incredible experience and a chance to contribute to environmental research.
