Wed, 25 Feb 2026 What is the UK's new travel system and how are dual nationals affected?

From 25 February, a new system will come into force which will affect many people, including British dual nationals.

* A new electronic travel authorisation (ETA) system has come into force from February 25 for citizens of 85 countries, including the US and Australia.
* An ETA is a digital permission to travel to the UK, valid for up to six months and allowing multiple journeys.
* Most people who have been able to travel to the UK visa-free until now will need an ETA, but those who usually need a visa will still require one.
* British or Irish citizens do not need an ETA or visa to visit or transit through the UK.
* The ETA system aims to streamline and speed up the immigration process, with most applications processed in minutes using the app.
* Dual nationals face difficulties getting a UK passport to comply with the new rules, which may cost £100 for a British passport and £589 for a certificate of entitlement.
* Applications can be made through the app, but users must travel on the same passport used for the application.
* Airlines, rail companies, and shipping firms have been given tools to verify travel permission digitally.
* An ETA does not grant entry rights, only permission to visit, and holders may still face checks at passport control.
