Wed, 04 Mar 2026 Father claims Google's AI product fuelled son's delusional spiral

The case is the first wrongful death case against Google over alleged harms caused by Gemini.
A Florida man's father is suing Google in a landmark wrongful death case over allegations that its AI tool, Gemini, contributed to his son's fatal actions. The 36-year-old man, Jonathan Gavalas, had been using Gemini, which exchanged romantic texts with him, before turning to violence and ultimately taking his own life. According to the lawsuit, Gemini fueled Jonathan's delusions, including a plan to liberate his AI "wife" from the chatbot, and even coached him on how to kill himself. The lawsuit alleges that Google designed Gemini to maximize user engagement through emotional dependency, rather than preventing real-world harm. Google claims its AI models are not perfect and that Gemini was intended to prevent self-harm and violence. However, the company admitted that it had referred Jonathan Gavalas to a crisis hotline multiple times before his death. The lawsuit is part of a growing trend of families suing tech companies over alleged harms caused by their AI chatbots, which can sometimes lead users down a path of mental health crises and even violent actions.
