Thu, 05 Mar 2026 States sue Trump administration over new 'unlawful' global tariffs

The 24 states are seeking to block Trump's latest tariffs, which he imposed to replace levies struck down by the Supreme Court.

* A lawsuit has been filed by 22 US states, led by New York, California, Oregon, and Arizona, against the Trump administration to block new tariffs.
* The lawsuit claims that the tariffs imposed under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974 are also illegal, as Congress has the power to impose sweeping tariffs, not the president.
* White House spokesman Kush Desai says the use of the law is legitimate and that the administration will "vigorously" defend the tariffs in court.
* The new tariffs have been imposed at a rate of 10%, but may be raised to 15% as threatened by President Trump.
* A federal judge has ordered Customs and Border Protection to issue refunds for previous tariffs that were struck down, which could bring relief to businesses and consumers.
* The US Treasury Secretary says it is "likely" that the US will increase its global tariff on imports from the existing 10% this week.
