Tue, 10 Mar 2026 Meta urged to boost oversight of fake AI videos

Meta's advisers say its methods for policing AI videos are inadequate, especially at times of crisis.
Meta's own Oversight Board has called on the company to take more action against fake AI-generated content on its platforms, including Facebook and Instagram.
* 21-person board raised concerns after Meta failed to label an AI-generated video of damage in Haifa, Israel
* The board warned that an increase in fake AI videos related to global military conflicts is "challenging the public's ability to distinguish fabrication from fact"
* The board called on Meta to overhaul its AI rules and proactively label fake AI content "much more frequently"
* Currently, Meta relies on users to self-disclose when they post AI-generated content
* Board criticized Meta for waiting too long to respond to user complaints about the video, which had been viewed almost 1 million times Meta has agreed to label the video in question within seven days. The board also raised concerns that Meta's current approach is "neither robust nor comprehensive enough" to deal with the scale and velocity of AI-generated content, particularly during conflicts.
